The BMW M1 marked BMW’s first venture into mid-engined sports cars and quickly earned its place as one of the most iconic supercars of the late 1970s. Initially conceived as a joint BMW-Lamborghini project, BMW soon assumed full control, bringing its hallmark German precision to every aspect of the car’s engineering.
Produced between 1978 and 1981, only around 450 M1s were ever made. Among these, 20 were specially built for the BMW M1 Procar Championship, a one-make racing series founded by Jochen Neerpasch, head of BMW Motorsport.
The championship showcased the era’s top drivers from diverse motorsport disciplines, all competing in identical machines—a pure test of skill over machinery, cementing the M1’s legacy on and off the track.
