The all-new Ford Escort debuted in 1968, just two years after England’s iconic World Cup victory in 1966. With Mexico set to host the next tournament in 1970, a grueling 16,000-mile rally was organised, connecting London to Mexico City.
At the time, the Ford works rally team was nearly unstoppable, and the Escort’s outstanding performance in the London to Mexico World Cup Rally inspired the release of a special edition model. In November 1970, Ford unveiled the Escort Mexico, named in honour of this achievement. These models featured reinforced bodyshells with additional strengthening panels in high-stress areas, making them ideal for competition use.
It’s likely Ford already envisioned a high-performance Escort to fill the gap between the 1300GT and the Twin Cam or RS1600. However, their victory in Mexico provided the perfect opportunity to launch such a model with an added sense of prestige and celebration.
