1948 Land Rover Series One in Sage Green - Portrait Poster
The original Land Rover was conceived and designed in 1947 by Maurice Wilks, the technical and chief engineer of the Rover company, alongside his brother Spencer Wilks, who was the managing director. It was launched at the Amsterdam Motor Show on April 30, 1948 and built until 1958.
The idea came in the aftermath of World War II when their luxury cars were not in demand and raw materials like steel were strictly rationed, so it was designed with an emphasis on agricultural use. The body of this rugged, light, utility four wheel drive vehicle made use of more readily available aluminium, with the added advantage that it wouldn't rust. The choice of colour was then dictated by military surplus supplies of aircraft cockpit paint, so early vehicles only came in various shades of light green.
