1964 VW Split Screen Camper Van Yellow and Cream - Portrait Poster

The Volkswagen Camper has become something of an icon in British and American culture, as a symbol of hippy and surf culture that grew in the mid-to-late 1960s.

In 1950, the concept of the VW Transporter was created from a sketch by Dutch businessman Ben Pon. It was later identified as the perfect vehicle to convert into a camper van.

Until 1967, the first generation came with a sweeping v-line front and split windscreens, earning them the name ‘splitties’. The rear air-cooled engine was simple and reliable.

Over 6 generations, the transporter has developed to incorporate more streamlined bodywork, more efficient engines and greater comfort inside. However, it is this original camper van still with the cult following today.
